According to the video and my point of view, vocabulary learning is a very important part of a language learning process, but it is not as easy as it seems to since to be able to use correctly a word, it is necessary knowing about the word. Its literal meaning, connotations, spelling, derivations, collocations, frequency, pronunciation, the sort of syntactic constructions into which it enters, the morphological options it offers and a rich variety of semantic associates such as synonyms, antonyms, homonyms (Nagy and Scott, 2000, as cited in Taylor, 1990). Moreover it requires lots of practice going through different kinds of drills day after day as Isabelle mentioned.

The repetition before considered old-fashioned is an exercise to memorize and increase the lexicon. But I agree with my colleagues that the mechanical way of repetition is meaningless, the contextualization of the vocabulary may be more effective. It is important to Remaind the student to use some chunks during the conversation.

Hello friends! Well, after watching the video and reading the comments my classmates have post here, I would say that the Lexical Access units and Lexical Specification must be taken into account when teaching new vocabulary. PERCEPTION and PRODUCTION are very important steps, and the same is true for the phonology, morphology, syntax and concept. Most times students aren't aware of those concepts when learning new vocab, but we, as teachers, must explore all these so that the learning can happen in a better and more successful way. The contextualization is really important, learning loose words is just useless. The pronunciation is something important too, because one word can be understood as another one by a wrong pronunciation. The association of image and sound/ word is good so that we don't need to translate. Once, as a Language Center Coordinator, I watched a class where a teacher was showing a picture card and translating the word to Portuguese. That's really not necessary, when the student is able to associate the picture to the sound of the word, the acquisition of such vocab / structure will happen. Our brain makes those associations, as the professor explained in the video. So, playing games, singing songs, watching movies, series, reading texts, books, all these increase our students' vocabulary. It's our job to make it a pleasant and unforgettable experience for them. Make it worth, useful in life.

Good evening everyone!
After watching the video and reading all my colleagues` comments I totally agree with Isabelle's opinion when she mentioned that a word must be read, written, heard or spoken many times to be retained in the brain. It's so important to use the four abilities to learn a language. I also think that Fábio brought a really important point saying that every person has different levels of acquirement, some will learn more by listening, writing and so on. Speaking about myself, I can repeat a word many times but it only becomes unforgettable when I write it down.

Language production depends of a building lexicon mental. So It’s important the teacher develops a word store with the students. This building vocabulary makes avaible the production speaking and writing abilities.

Hello, guys!
This video is amazing and filled the lack of comprehension that I used to feel about language. It could explain me something that I knew but could not explain: how does our brain work according to the language. As humans, we learn words not as a dictionary, a simple entry, but we kind of "give sense" to the words, that's why we can change the meaning of a word (of a set of sounds and letters) as long as we want to fit it into our need of communication. It is truly interesting to perceive the a word is not only a set of symbols, but it has much more in it. Our works very fast to understand all the process that occurs in understanding the meaning of a word. That's why some learns new words only when they see them written, others can learn by listening... that's so interesting!
Thanks!!!
